The oh-so-short clip features BMW’s concept cruising around on empty streets and parking lots to dramatic background music. The start of the video provides a short snippet of subdued engine (road?) noise, while an electric shock sound effect is thrown in a few times to remind us of its eDrive powertrain. The hybrid equation starts with a rear-mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gas engine rated at 220 hp, while a 129-hp eDrive motor takes charge of the front wheels. BMW says the combination should propel the Spyder from 0-62 mph in about 5.0 seconds while achieving an impressive 80 mpg average.
The Spyder is a bit smaller than the i8 Coupe Concept, but shares many of the coupe’s design cues including the scissor-style doors, high beltline, and its simple, yet modern cabin. No word on when the i8 duo will reach showrooms, but don’t expect to see it sooner than the i3 city car, which is expected to debut in 2014.
