Naming off reasons why you want a 2012 BMW 3 Series and getting it on video sounds easy enough, but BMW’s “0 to Desir3 in 5.9 seconds” competition made that task a little tougher. Entrants had to express their desire for an all-new 3 Series in 5.9 seconds — the time it takes for the 2012 BMW 328i to accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill. After more than 2000 submitted videos were reviewed, judges named one entrant’s nostalgic video the winner.
Earl Duque of Los Angeles picked up his shiny red 2012 BMW 3 Series from a local dealership last week, all thanks to his winning video “Test Drive Nostalgia.” With a little help from a green screen, Duque was able to superimpose himself and his friend into a pre-existing commercial for the 3 Series. In it, they’re seen screaming as they jump a steep hill and speed down a street.
BMW kicked the contest off on Facebook and YouTube back in February. A panel of judges then picked 30 finalists, whose videos were then placed in the public sphere for voting. Among the submissions not picked, there are several that are still clever and entertaining enough to spend six seconds of your life watching. But in the end, it was Duque’s humorous spin on BMW’s assignment that earned him the grand prize.
In addition to releasing the finalists’ six-second videos, BMW has also released a series of funny videos highlighting its no-cost maintenance program. A prospective buyer is somewhat skeptical about the too-good-to-be-true program, and finds himself asking “What’s Next” in several different scenarios.
