The 2011 Best Driver’s Car competition continues this week on the Motor Trend Channel. In the last installment of BDC, Jonny Lieberman and Justin Bell took a look at the field of contenders. In this episode, experienced racing driver Randy Pobst flogs the contestants around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca raceway to separate the contenders from the pretenders.
In terms of what Pobst looks for the most in a driver’s car, he says, “The same things that make a car the best driver’s car, makes me faster on the racetrack. Especially, predictability. I want to know what’s going to happen when I enter a corner.” Bell takes Lieberman of a tour of the track, pointing out the elevation changes and technical turns in each of the track’s corners.
After taking all the cars out, and experiencing their handling on Laguna Seca’s technical track, Pobst made his recommendations for which models he’d drop from contention for the top spot. Surprisingly, the criteria were not necessarily based solely on lap times, as some of the faster cars were eliminated.
