It’s hard to debate with numbers, and the numbers show that the 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish is not significantly quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera S coupe that costs a third as much. But today’s Feature Flick from Aston Martin reminds us of something else: the Vanquish may very well be a much better sensory experience.
It’s a short video, just over two minutes, and the car in question doesn’t budge an inch. In all honesty it’s just two minutes of tracking shots of the new Vanquish’s various interior and exterior features while Aston plays a soundtrack of another Vanquish driving enthusiastically. And yet the Aston Martin Vanquish’s combination of sumptuous design and aural delight is, well, wonderful. The video proves what Aston is known for: Vanquish buyers may not spend $280,000 on a car because it’s faster than a Porsche 911 or Lamborghini Gallardo, but because it’s more beautiful.
That $280,000 gets you a 5.9-liter V-12 that makes 565 hp and 457 lb-ft, a six-speed sequential manual gearbox, and rear-wheel drive, good for a 4.1-second 0-60 run and a top speed of 183 mph. On the inside, the cabin has been upgraded with quilted seat bolsters, a full leather interior, a Bang and Olufsen 1000-watt stereo, and even in-car WiFi hotspot capability. On the outside, the old Aston Martin DBS’s design–hardly unsightly–has been worked over once more, and the whole package is beautifully constructed.
