The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG was already revealed in some leaked photos, and we snagged a brief ride in a pre-production model. This teaser video gives us a taste of the car’s aggressive exhaust note, and also points out its V8 BiTurbo badging and quad square exhaust tips. The clip doesn’t announce any arrival date for the new car, but we expect to see the S63 AMG later this summer and that it will go on sale before the end of the year.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG will use a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 engine that produces 585 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. In the U.S., the car will be offered only with 4Matic all-wheel drive, which should be able to rocket to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. Mass-saving tricks like a lithium-ion battery, carbon-ceramic brakes, and aluminum body panels help shave as much as 220 pounds compared to a standard Mercedes S550.
The outgoing S63 AMG had a version of the twin-turbo V-8 that produced either 536 hp as standard of 563 hp with the optional AMG Performance package. It could hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and was electronically limited to 155 mph as standard, or 186 mph with the performance pack.
The S63 is based on the new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which debuted earlier this year. It has a bolder, more extroverted design, as well as a more extensive list of luxury appointments that includes a hot-stone massage feature and heated armrests. The S550 is standard with a twin-turbo 4.7-liter V-8 rated for 455 hp and 516 lb-ft; it is coupled to a seven-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or 4Matic all-wheel drive. Weight reductions, as well as improved aerodynamics and powertrain tweaks, are said to improve fuel economy by five percent compared to the outgoing S-Class.
Expect more details on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG later this summer.
