The midsize sedan segment has often, warranted or not, had a reputation as being populated only by dull, boring, and overly similar cars. Nissan wants to change that perception with the 2013 Altima, and this commercial for the car is designed to hammer home that idea.
“Wouldn’t it be cool,” asks the narrator in this commercial, “If someone took midsize sedans and broke the mold?” The clip then goes on to show a 2012 Nissan Altima sedan being deconstructed to its core elements, and rebuilt into the new 2013 model. Further emphasizing the point, the clip shows a “cookie cutter” outline of a sedan being broken — the implication being that the 2013 Altima breaks the midsize sedan mold.
The clip is a unique way of showcasing the new version of the Nissan Altima. The 2013 Altima made its public debut at the New York auto show with an evolutionary design change, engines that were modified for improved fuel economy, and a raft of clever technologies like blind-spot detection. With regards to size and specifications, the new Altima stacks up well against its midsize sedan competition. Out on the road, we found the Altima a pleasant and respectable, but not game-changing, entry in its hotly contested class.
The base engine is a 2.5-liter inline-four with 182 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, coupled to a continuously variable transmission. Higher models of the Altima get a 3.5-liter V-6 with 270 hp and 258 lb-ft, which also is mated to a CVT. Pricing starts at $22,280 (including a $780 destination charge) for the base Altima 2.5, and rises to $30,860 for the top-spec Altima 3.5 SL.
