The 2012 Hyundai Azera is the next Knight Industries Two Thousand, and it’s childproof; that is, if you believe the newest set of advertisements for the Azera, made with help from cult-favorite movie writer Wes Anderson, famous for his work on The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Hyundai has released two advertisements that will air on television this Sunday during the Academy Awards. The first, entitled “Talk to My Car,” focuses on the Azera’s Blue Link telematics system as a selling point. Asking your Azera to find an Italian restaurant, it would seem, is the new version of a movie hero talking to his omniscient car (think Michael Knight and KITT). Watch closely, and you’ll catch homages to Knight Rider, The Spy Who Loved Me, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Italian Job all crammed into a thirty-second spot.
The second spot is called “Modern Life,” and follows writer Anderson’s formula of controlled chaos, as a father struggles to keep his kids in line and make dinner at the same time. The Azera, it would appear, is a welcome respite from doing either one.
Either way, Hyundai hopes to be a bit cinematic and a bit comedic this Sunday. Check out its attempts (and hopefully laugh a bit) below.
