On this week’s episode of Hot Rod Unlimited, David Freiburger decides to find out if old muscle is really faster than new muscle. He grabs the keys to a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and meets with Mark Stielow and his Pro Touring 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Red Devil for a go at the track.
The meeting place was Michigan’s GingerMan Raceway, and the competition was simple; Stielow, a GM engineer, would lap the racetrack in the Camaro ZL1, and then set a lap in the Pro Touring 1969 Camaro he built, nicknamed the Red Devil. The Red Devil is powered by a 7.0-liter supercharged LS9 V-8 that produces 750 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. The Red Devil has a modern six-speed manual backing up that engine, and features a completely reworked aftermarket suspension.
The Camaro ZL1 on the other hand, was completely stock. The car comes from the factory with a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 making 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. This particular ZL1 came with a six-speed manual transmission.
