Although BMW recently introduced its range of electric vehicles, it appears the German automaker has already been working on a smaller and less expensive EV.
BMW and the Technical University of Munich (TUM), along with Daimler and other engineers, have joined forces on project Visio.M. The project produced an electric car concept that’s slated to be a less expensive and efficient yet still safe alternative to other electric cars. The compact EV was designed with safety in mind, and while BMW claims some EVs on the market today are too heavy because they’ve been derived from gasoline-powered models, the concept EV is said to have a curb weight — without the battery — of no more than 882 pounds (400 kilograms). Power will come from a 15 kW electric motor.
While there are no official photos of the concept, Visio.M will use similar technology to the MUTE prototype pictured here, a car TUM scientists have used to study areas such as propulsion and energy storage. More than $14 million is going toward the Visio.M project, thanks in part to the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.
