DXM is usually short for dextromethorphan, one of the ingredients in NyQuil. According to one report, however, dXM is about to mean the exact opposite: a 500 hp, 650 lb-ft BMW 5-Series sedan. With power like that, expect this car to rocket its passengers awake with the flex of the driver’s right foot.
We’re not talking about the M5, however, and this car won’t run on premium unleaded, either: the d in dXM should stand for diesel.
The Detroit Bureau is reporting that BMW is mulling the creation of a sportier diesel 5 Series to slot far above its current offerings. The current European range topping sedan is the 535d, which produces 313 hp; the only diesel offerings Americans see from BMW are the 335d and X5 xDrive35d, which both use the same engine, producing 265 hp.
The Detroit Bureau is saying we can expect nearly double that from the new diesel: BMW will keep the same 3.0-liter block as before, but by swapping in a new cylinder head and moving from a two-turbo to three-turbo setup, it should produce around 500 hp and around 650 lb-ft of torque. While the power figures on the diesel should come in under the M5’s 560 hp, but will dwarf the new model’s 500 lb-ft of torque.
With 650 lb-ft of torque on tap from the diesel, expect BMW to put that power to the ground via its xDrive all-wheel drive system.
Which brings us to the model’s name: the sporty model obviously can’t be called the M5, so the combination of features should make for an interesting sounding name. Because the car would possibly have a 3.0-liter I-6 diesel tuned by BMW’s M Division and xDrive AWD, expect the name to include the letters x, M, and d, and a number greater than 35 referring to the engine. The Detroit Bureau says the car will be called the 550dXM, but other possibilities (using BMW’s current naming conventions) include the 550dM xDrive, 550xD M, et cetera.
Word soup aside, the BMW will be fast–that is, if it’s actually made. At current, BMW will only say that the model is under consideration and isn’t yet official. In the meantime, what do you think?
