EDITORS' NOTEBOOK: 2008 Volkswagen Touareg V6, Day 1
Read Jason Cammisa’s comments on driving the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg V6.
The interior of this stripped model is much less nice than the higher models’, and the VR6 has lost all of its acoustic charm. What ever happened to the sweet, sonorous song coming from the VR6? It’s been replaced by a coarse, rough growl. And not the good kind.
It’s a cute truck (which is funny to say considering its enormous size), but the more time I spend in it, the less I like it. Lateral grip is good, but I can’t get past the engine note, and the trans feels decidedly old-school. There’s loads of wind noise (way too much, in fact, around the windshield), and the cruise control is horrid, varying speed noticeably all the time. The voltage gauge does the same: watch it for two seconds while cruising on the highway and you’ll see the needle move constantly. That’s if you don’t crash first because the Touareg moves around so much in crosswinds.
This isn’t my kind of truck unless it’s got the V-10 TDI in it. That motor is just so cool it makes up for the rest of the Touareg’s shortcomings.
