I tend to agree with Marc – the E-class’s interior, especially in base form, isn’t up to my personal standard of what a Mercedes-Benz should be. (Granted, this is based solely on experience with the company’s early-’70s and late-’80s/early-’90s cars, cars that were built when making a profit was secondary to building indestructible transportation, but still.) The climate knobs are a bit too chintzy, the oddment tray and center console feel flimsy, and the chrome trim reminds me of the plastichrome stuff that used to come on Revell model kits when I was a kid.
Still, it’s a modern Benz diesel, which means that it could look and feel like a dime-store pedal car and I’d still love it. Torquey, smooth, and efficient as hell. (I want one of these engines in an early ’70s 280 four-door. Or a pagoda-roof *** At what point will the country realize that oil-burners are far better interim solutions to our consumption problems than hybrids?
