EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK: 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, Day 2
Read Joe Lorio’s comments on driving the 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.
Years ago, I drove a Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG on the smooth, empty desert roads north of Phoenix, and I was blown away by it. Insanely powerful (for its day), fast, nimble, and fun, it struck me as a car I could drive every day for the next ten years. But then I drove it in Michigan, and it felt as if the tires were filled with cement. The C63 is much the same. After a few jarring thwacks, courtesy of the ultra-low-profile tires and the super-stiff suspension, I found myself on hyper-alert, trying to avoid every bump in the road. That flaw aside however, this is a superstar Benz. I love how the engine does a little show-off throttle blip when you start it up. Once again, the power is insane (the mark of AMG). The steering is the tightest and most communicative in the Mercedes lineup. The seats have more lateral support than anything outside of a racing car. The C-class interior is surprisingly cheap, but dynamically, the C63 is a dynamo. But steer clear of the potholes.
