By now, you’ve likely seen photos of the 2011 Kia Cadenza (above), the large luxury sedan that will replace the Amanti. Here’s the question: Is the sketch to the right simply a design rendering for the Cadenza, or is it a sign of something larger for Kia?
Autocar believes it could be something bigger. It claims the sketch, shown by Kia chief designer Peter Schreyer at a design conference last week, previews a luxury sports sedan (codenamed K9) that could be based off the Hyundai Genesis platform. A Kia rep claims otherwise, saying it’s just a sketch for the upcoming Cadenza. If so, there are a number of discrepancies between the sketch and the actual Cadenza. The sketch looks a lot more angular than the Cadenza, and displays unique headlamp and lower bumper shapes.
Still, we wonder how Kia could position such a model in the U.S. Hyundai has the budget-luxury message pretty much buttoned up with the Genesis (and ultimately the Equus), and Kia’s latest offerings have been youthful, mixing vibrant design with value. The Cadenza will join Kia’s revamped lineup late next year.
