Following the success of the 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pack (all 100 units sold out very quickly), Mopar announced it will resurrect the track-only muscle coupe for 2010.
As was the case with the 2009 model, the 2010 Drag Pack starts with a stock Challenger body in white, but Mopar modifies the car to prepare it for track life. From the get-go, the cars are NHRA-approved for Stock, Super Stock, and Comp Eliminator classes, but can be configured to be legal for up to 40 different NHRA and IHRA categories.
Unlike the 2009 cars — which were equipped with one of three different engine choices — the 2010 Challenger Drag Pack only comes equipped with a modified form of the 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 found in the production Challenger SRT8 (90 percent of the 2009 cars were built with this engine). The engine is treated to a number of changes, including a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, forged pistons, revised valve lift and hydraulic roller cams, and a modified high-ram intake manifold. The car can be set up to accept either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission, but you need to supply the gearbox.
The Drag Pack also adds a composite hood, a lightweight cooling module, manual rack and pinion steering, and a cable-operated throttle linkage. Polycarbonate windows, coupled with the removal of many superfluous OEM subsystems (do you really need a radio or A/C in a race car?) help shave 1000 pounds off the Challenger’s curb weight.
Seeing as each car will start at $39,999, we expect the 2010 Challenger Drag Pack cars to sell out as quickly as the first batch did. If you’re interested in grabbing an example, submit your application to www.mopar.com
