Mega Money for Mitsubishi Galant
Is a 2008 Galant worth close to six figures?; An Australian Mitsubishi dealer thinks so, as he just purchased an example at auction for a whopping $93,964 in U.S. currency – more than three times its sticker price.
Granted, this wasn’t just any anonymous Galant – rather, it was the last one built at the Tonsley Park plant, located near Adelaide.; Until this April, Tonsley Park was Mitsubishi’s sole remaining factory in Australia.
The plant has a checkered past, originally serving as Chrysler’s base for Australian production in 1964, before its sale to Mitsubishi in 1980.; Although the Galant (known in Australia as the 380) has been discontinued, employees will produce a decade-long stockpile of parts before shuttering the factory altogether.
Consumers all but ignored the 380 during its three year production span, but buyers fought to obtain the last example built down under.; Although the second-to-last car was donated to the National Motor Museum, Mitsubishi chose to auction the final 380.
On a positive note, all proceeds from the stratospheric selling price will go to charity.; Still, we’d have to imagine that any Mitsu retailer here in the U.S. can only dream of unloading a Galant for that kind of money.
