Toyota’s latest TSB provides its technicians with proper instructions on how to repair two weld nuts on its Avalon and Camry accelerator pedal assemblies should they become damaged during recall servicing — instructions that had been requested by a few technicians. According to Toyota, certain unidentified media reports saw the TSB as acknowledgment that repairs had been improperly performed, which it asserts is not the case. There are no vehicles on the road with stripped or compromised weld nuts and the TSB was intended to supplement technical information not included with the current factory repair manuals.
A separate Automotive News report says some Toyota technicians had inadvertently stripped the weld nuts during recall repairs, but Toyota spokesperson Brian Lyons confirmed the issue is “extremely rare on a handful of vehicles.” Any stripped nuts are immediately fixed and this particular problem is localized to the Avalon and Camry.
