In the high-volume compact car segment, the 2012 Toyota Corolla pulled ahead of the pack with 24,804 units sold last month. Just a few hundred units shy of the Corolla was the 2012 Honda Civic, which found its way home to 24,423 customers during April. Prior to the 2011 Japanese disaster, the Corolla and Civic had long dominated the 1-2 spots in the rankings, though it’s too early to say how long they can hold on.
In third place is the Ford Focus with 19,425 units sold, an increase of 12.5 percent compared to April 2011. The Focus was the compact sales leader for March. The Chevy Cruze remains in fourth place with 18,205 units sold during the month of April, which is 27.6 percent less compared to the same period last year. Also staying put from last month’s rankings is the Hyundai Elantra. With sales of just 16,836 units, April sales for the Elantra represent a 23.8-percent drop compared to April 2011.
Rounding off the sixth- and seventh-place spots are the Volkswagen Jetta and the 2012 Mazda3. Volkswagen sold 13,754 of its compact sedan last month, while Mazda moved 8508 units.
