The compact sales race was close in March, with just four units separating the top two spots, and only a 94-unit difference between first and third place. The sales volume victor for the month was the Ford Focus, which sold 28,293 units. Coming in right on its heels was the Toyota Corolla, with 28,289 units sold, and the Honda Civic with 28,199 sold.
Though last month the Civic enjoyed a comfortable lead over the competition, perhaps due to stronger incentives, the Focus and Corolla both surpassed the controversially styled compact’s sales volume in March. Of the top three, only the Focus was up from its performance the same month last year, surging 64.7 percent over the 17,178 units sold last March. The Corolla was down 6.4 percent, while the Civic slid 12.9 percent.
In fourth place, and the last to break 20,000 units for the month, was the Chevy Cruze with 21,607 units sold, an increase of 19.9 percent over the 18,018 units sold the same period last year. The Hyundai Elantra was next best-selling at 19,681 units sold for a 2.2-percent gain over the 19,255 units sold March of last year. Rounding out the top eight is the Volkswagen Jetta, Nissan Sentra, and Mazda3, which sold 14,966, 14,092, and 13,235 units, respectively.
