Chris Bangle Quits BMW

Former Bmw Group Design Chief Chris Bangle

Chris Bangle, designer of the current X3, X5, 3-Series, 5-Series and 7-Series, is quitting his job as BMW Group’s design head “to pursue his own design-related endeavors beyond the auto industry.”

“Christopher Bangle has had a lasting impact on the identity of BMW Group’s brands. His contribution to the company’s success has been decisive,” said Klaus Draeger, BMW’s development chief.

Bangle developed BMW’s polarizing modern design theme of flame surfacing. Adrian von Hooydonk, the head of design for BMW brand, will take over the post, following a design philosophy Bangle has laid out for the brand. Van Hooydonk had heavy influence on the designs of several of BMW’s upcoming vehicles, including the Progressive Activity Sedan, as well as the new 6- and 7-Series.

Glad he’s leaving! But his replacement doesn’t sound too appealing either. I guess I’ll continue to avoid Bimmers for the next several years … again.
