With the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51 out of the gate, the automaker is focusing on the rest of the lineup. Next up for the 2014 Corvette is the Z06 successor, which should be the track star in the sports car’s lineup.
As the photographer of this 2014 Corvette Z06 replacement pointed out, there are many unanswered questions about this car. For starters, there’s the name. Rumors suggest Chevrolet could drop the Z06 moniker in favor of Z07 (because it’s a C7), but the high-performance Corvette’s official name is still unclear. Also, this tester is sporting an odd roof that appears to be a removable hardtop or soft-top. We’re not sure what that’s about, but the first Z06 was offered with a small hardtop, so General Motors could be exploring that possibility.
Despite the funky roof, the 2014 Corvette test mule does feature larger wheels and brakes, and the mesh air vent located on the lower part of the rear fender, ahead of the wheels. Our sister publication Hot Rod also posted spy photos of C7 Corvettes that were caught by a reader in Arizona. Those cars, however, appear to have a normal roof.
Perhaps a bigger mystery is the powertrain. The C6 Z06 was powered by large displacement, naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V-8 rated at 505 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet could drop that engine altogether in favor of a twin-turbo V-8, possibly with a supercharger. Or it might retain a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V-8 with the possibility of direct injection. Ultimately, how much power the Z06 replacement makes will depend on the upcoming ZR1′s powertrain output. Regardless of what’s under the hood, you can count on the Z06 successor to be quick and even more impressive around the track than the regular Corvette Stingray. We’ll hopefully find out for ourselves within a year.
