Chevrolet Camaro Racecar to Debut at VIR Sunday

2010 Chevrolet Camaro #6 Sunoco Racecar

This Sunday at Virginia International Raceway marks the first time all three modern-day muscle cars will compete head-to-head in a sanctioned race series, thanks to the debut appearance of the 2010 Sunoco with the 2010 Sunoco Chevrolet Camaro racecar making its first appearance on the track.

We first saw this sweet-looking #6 Camaro (which emulates the famed Penske-Sunoco Camaros driven by Mark Donohue and Ronnie Bucknum) at the 2008 SEMA show in Las Vegas, but the folks at Riley Technologies have continued to work their magic on the car. Perhaps even more interesting, the Camaro will be piloted by drivers David Donohue and Jeff Bucknum, the sons of the Mark and Ronnie, respectively.

“I am so excited to be a part of a program that brings so much history together in today’s sports car racing,” said Bucknum. “I have enjoyed working on setting up this program not only for personal reasons but also for the chance to get to know David Donohue.”

For once in his career, David Donohue is excited and comfortable playing off his dad’s fame and reputation as a racecar driver, as he is literally following in his father’s footsteps. He shares Bucknum’s enthusiasm for the project and is excited to see it come to reality.

The race is this Sunday, but will not be aired on TV. However, the Grand-Am website will have timing and scoring updates.

Glad to finally see a new Camaro in a race series again. Good thing no one can afford one now the economy took a crap, huh? <completely sarcastic> Make no mistake, this isn’t the late 1960′s, no matter who makes it look so. Your bread and butter working class guy will be hard pressed to own one of these cars even used in the next 5-10 years. B.S.
