Special edition Volvo models are few and far between, but it appears the Swedish automaker may resort to such tactics to infuse a little intrigue into its product range. Its Italian arm, for instance, just revealed the new C30 Black Edition, which will only be sold in Italia.
Leveraging Italy’s apparent love for carbon fiber (we’ve lost count of the composite-bodied supercars that hail from the country), Volvo utilized the material’s look — if not the material itself — to alter the C30′s appearance. Not only are the mirror covers and grille surround wrapped in 3M’s carbon-like wrap, but so is every painted surface above the C30′s waistline. The roof panel, A-, B-, and C-pillars are all bathed in the artificial wrap, which appears to do a good job of mimicking the real thing.
17-inch matte-black wheels are also part of the package (18-inch rims are optional), as are unique logos on the C-pillars, door sills, and floor mats. Customers are able to select from five different paint colors, including white, orange, titanium, and two types of silver (metallic and non-metallic).
Sadly, the Black Edition’s modifications don’t extend to powertrain. Black Edition models are available with the typical C30 engine offerings, including a 143-horsepower, 2.0-liter I-4; a 113-horsepower, 1.4-liter diesel I-4; and a 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel I-4. Italian Volvo dealers will start taking orders come May, don’t expect inventory to last all that long — only 600 units are slated for production.
