Although BMW’s two shining stars at January’s Detroit auto show will most definitely be the sexy 4 Series Coupe Concept and the sultry M6 Gran Coupe, that’s not all the Bavarian automaker will be showing. Also making their world debuts in the Motor City will be the lightly refreshed 2014 Z4 roadster and the special 1 Series Coupe and Convertible Limited Edition Lifestyle.
2014 BMW Z4
Don’t blink – if you do, you may miss the updates BMW has bestowed on the 2014 Z4. Aesthetic upgrades include subtly revised headlights with new LED running lights, new fender scoops akin to those on the 4 Series, new 17- and 18-inch alloy wheel options, and black-and-orange contrasting trims on some models. The Z4 will now also be offered with a M Sport package that adds more aggressive fascias and wheels.
The Z4 also gains a new base engine for 2014: a 156-hp variant of the brand’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. BMW already offers the 2.0-liter in the Z4 under the sDrive28i moniker with 240 hp; the new version will wear the sDrive18i badge and have a lower price than the current car’s $48,245 base price. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard and an eight-speed automatic will be optional.
Also available on 2014 Z4 models will be various driver assistance systems and the upgraded iDrive system with expanded BMW ConnectedDrive internet-based infotainment services.
2013 BMW 1 Series Coupe and Convertible Limited Edition Lifestyle
Consider this special-edition of the 1 Series to be the beginning of the car’s swansong. An all-new 1 Series is expected to debut at some point within the next 12 to 24 months, and it will ride atop a new front-wheel-drive platform shared with Mini.
To help send the current 1er coupe and convertible off into the sunset is this Limited Edition Lifestyle package. There are three unique exterior colors (mineral white, sapphire black, and space grey metallic), 18-inch alloy wheels, and brown leather trim with white contrast stitching. Convertibles receive a brown soft-top with silver pigmentation, as well. Pricing and has yet to be announced, but the limited-run 1er will go on sale next spring.
