In most of the world, BMW built its reputation on being the Ultimate Driving Machine. But here in China, many wealthy car buyers would rather ride in the back seat and be chauffeured, leading to the creation of the long-wheelbase BMW 3 Series.
Based on the new, F30-generation 3 Series, the long wheelbase BMW will be offered in 320Li diesel, 240-hp 328Li, and 300-hp 335Li derivatives. The car has been stretched about 4.3 inches compared to a regular 3 Series sedan, adding rear legroom and making for easier entry and exit from the rear door. The Chinese market also gets a long wheelbase version of the 5 Series.
To further satisfy back-seat passengers, the 3 Series Li models get vanity mirrors, rear sunshades, and power recline rear seats. They will be built at BMW’s new factory in Shenyang and will only be available within China.
We got a chance to examine a 335Li on the BMW stand in Beijing, and it’s easy to tell that the car is longer than a normal 3 Series. Rear legroom looks to be extremely generous, far more than is usually on offer in an F30-generation 3 Series.
