When it comes to infotainment systems bundled with rotary controllers, we’ve long held that Audi’s system, along with the Multimedia Interface (MMI) control, is one of the best in the industry. Still, Audi’s decided to tweak the system for 2010, and the changes may make a good thing even better.
To start, look at the display. Audi’s replaced the old unit with a new 6.5-inch screen, capable of handling 800 x 480 pixel resolution. Graphics are noticeably sharper than before, speed limits (at least on European models) are displayed when in split-screen view, and users can scroll horizontally, vertically, and along the route when using the 3-D map.
Audi’s also taken the time to update the hardware behind the screen. A new 600 MHz processor speeds route calculation and improves the system’s overall usability. Two SD card slots behind the screen aren’t necessarily a new feature, but they’ve been improved to allow the use of cards as large as 32 GB. If you opt for the Audi Music Interface, it now adds the ability to charge your iPod, and you’re also able to stream music from your iPhone via Bluetooth.
U.S. pricing for the new navigation and MMI system has not yet been revealed, but they will first appear on the 2010 A3, TT, and R8, which will arrive at dealers this fall.
