Audi has not let its A8 flagship grow stale, since the third generation model went on-sale in 2010. High-performance S8 and high-mileage TDI models have joined the lineup, with a model for almost every taste in luxury. Despite the ongoing improvements, Audi is preparing to launch its new, fourth-generation 2015 A8 at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show next month, promising even greater levels of performance, refinement and technical sophistication than the present model.
In typical Audi fashion, the exterior changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary, and that’s fine by us. But the A8 will also follow Audi tradition of showcasing state-of-the-art technology. In particular, new LED lighting technology. LED lighting in cars is nothing new, dating back almost 30 years in limited applications, and even full-LED headlamps becoming more common on mainstream vehicles.
But Audi adds another wrinkle to the story with what it’s claiming is the world’s first application of adaptive LED headlights with Audi’s new Matrix LED headlights, in which individual diodes can be turned on or off depending on lighting needs or conditions. Examples of the new headlight system’s function are automatically dimming when an oncoming car is approaching, and predictive illumination based on navigation route information.
