Eco-friendly street lamps are nothing new (the streets of Ann Arbor, Michigan, are illuminated nightly with energy-efficient LED lamps), but TAK Studio has an interesting idea: wind-powered lamps.
The design is interesting. Electricity is derived from a wind turbine of sorts, but instead of resembling a windmill, TAK’s turbine blades wrap around the pole itself. The idea, the design firm says, is to harness the gusts of wind created by passing traffic.
Although still a design concept at this stage, TAK plans on building prototypes, and has entered the design into the Greener Gadgets Competition. In order to truly find a market, however, the wind-powered lamps need to be cost effective, especially when compared to the LED and solar-powered lamps already on the market.
