A new survey says that interest in the Chevrolet Volt electric car is tapering off. According to the research, the number of people considering buying a Volt in July was far lower than in March of this year.However, a Chevrolet spokesman tells us the only thing stopping Volt sales is availability of the car.
According to CNW Marketing Research,of people who self-identified as early adopters, more than 21 percent said in March 2011 that they were interested in buying a Volt. By July, that number had fallen to 14.6 percent. Among survey respondents who identified themselves as electric-car enthusiasts, interest dropped from 25 percent in March to 17 percent last month.
“In fact, all categories of new-car intenders are reporting less likelihood of even considering the [Chevrolet Volt],” reports CNW. The majority of those who no longer express interest in the Volt reportedly said they thought the car is too expensive.
The survey data doesn’t fit with what Chevrolet Volt spokesman Rob Peterson has seen. “We’re not hearing that from dealers,” he said. Peterson said that interest in the Volt from customers and dealers is still “enthusiastic.”
The one issue continuing to affect Volt sales is availability. The car is currently only offered in seven states, but will be on sale across the U.S. by the end of 2011. Moreover, the Detroit-area factory that builds the Volt was shut down from June through late July for upgrades. Peterson said many GM dealerships don’t currently have any Volts to sell due to the shutdown, although many dealers are now starting to sell six-month-old ex-demonstrator Volts.
Based on General Motors’ data, sales of the Chevrolet Volt peaked at 608 cars in March, but fell to just 125 sales in July. Through the end of July, the company had tallied 2870 Volt sales.
