Yes, even prototype sports cars have to become commuter cars every once in a while: a reader sent in photos of a next-generation Porsche Boxster prototype testing during morning rush hour in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We wouldn’t be all that surprised if the car is in town for emissions testing, seeing as the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory is located within the city’s limits.
Visually, the new Boxster gets a more aggressive, curvy rear deck, which will house a selection of horizontally opposed engines. We hear that the Boxster will get at least two flat-sixes: a 2.7 liter-unit hat produces 255 hp, and a 3.4-liter engine that cranks out about 315 hp. There’s also talk of a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat four, which could produce a scalding 360 horsepower.
This particular Boxster was wearing plenty of camouflage in the form of black tape and obscured taillights. We expect that the final model will look a little bit different than this, of course, but when we’ll see that model is anyone’s guess: we believe the 2012 Boxster will bow some time over the next few months.
