While General Motors is looking for tax incentives to keep 2500 employees at its headquarters in Detroit, the automaker is also looking to move approximately 1500 employees out of the Renaissance Center and into other locations across southeastern Michigan.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson said Monday that the move was "imminent," but insisted the company's world headquarters would remain at the Renaissance Center. A GM spokesman told the Detroit Free Press that the company was looking to consolidate its operations, but had "nothing to announce at this time."

Relocated workers may be moved into the company's Technical Center located in Warren, a suburb just north of Detroit. GM hopes to consolidate its operations in four locations in southeast Michigan, and wants similar departments to reside under the same roof. Corporate functions, like legal and finance, would remain in Detroit.

GM bought the "RenCen" for $70 million in 1996, and spent about $500 million to renovate and modernize the structure.
