Volkswagen Announces TDI Cup Street Edition

Remember that sweet Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition concept shown at last year's SEMA show? Volkswagen announced that it -- minus the gigantic graphics on the sides of the car -- will actually reach production.

The TDI Cup Street Edition comes standard with a four-piece body kit styled to resemble those used on Jetta TDI Cup race cars. TDI Cup Street cars also come equipped with larger brakes (topped with red calipers), 18-inch wheels, sway bars, and suspension tuning copped from the Jetta GLI. In a way, this is as close to the European Golf GDI -- essentially a diesel GTI -- as we can get.

The one thing unchanged on the TDI Cup Street is the engine. It's the same 2.0-liter turbo-diesel I-4, which pumps out 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Like a normal TDI sedan, the Cup is available with either a standard six-speed manual transmission, or an available six-speed dual-clutch (DSG) transaxle. Either way, the car will achieve at least 30/41 mpg city/highway.

Volkswagen hasn't revealed pricing for the TDI Cup Street Edition, but we're told the sedan will command a slightly higher price -- possibly $25,000 -- than a standard TDI ($23,410). Look for the dashing diesel sedan to arrive at dealers in the Spring of 2010
