Vice President Joe Biden is expected to announce Fisker Automotive will refurbish GM’s former Wilmington, Delaware, plant for production of plug-in hybrids.
The White House announced yesterday that Vice President Joe Biden, a former senator from Delaware, and Delaware Governor Jack Markell will make a major announcement regarding the future of GM’s old Wilmington, Delaware, plant. Henrik Fisker, CEO of Fisker Automotive, said last week that the company would announce the location of its refurbished U.S. plant soon. Anonymous Delaware state officials told the Detroit Free Press on Friday that the two are one and the same, and Fisker is going to refurbish the Delaware plant.
Previously, the plant produced the Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice, and Opel/Vauxhall GT that was exported to Europe. The plant closed last summer as the Kappa platform was cancelled.
Fisker plans on using the factory for production of its next-generation plug-in hybrid. Its first, the Karma, will be built in Finland by Valmet Automotive. The next-generation plug-in is currently known as Project Nina and will sell for around $48,000, almost half of what the Karma will cost before a $7500 federal tax credit. Fisker estimates it will produce around 100,000 vehicles per year at the Delaware plant.
