Although it’s long been known as a Dutch company, Spkyer Cars N.V. announced today it would be shifting production of its supercars from the Netherlands to Coventry, England.
According to a release issued by Spyker, the drastic shift in production locales is actually a move to cut costs. Roughly half of Spkyer’s supplier base is located in England, so building cars in the country will help reduce shipping costs and cut delivery times. Interestingly, assembly will be handled at a facility owned by CPP Manufacturing -- Spkyer’s first supplier.
“In these challenging times, a small manufacturer like Spkyer has to find ways to reduce costs as well as improve its efficiency,” said Victor Muller, Spkyer’s CEO. “We believe this move is necessary under the current economic circumstances and is in the best interest of the company and all of its stakeholders.”
The move, which should be finished by the end of the year, will affect roughly 45 out of Spkyer’s 135 employees. Although manufacturing will move to the U.K., the company’s management, engineering, marketing, and race team staff will remain in the Netherlands.
