We saw Toyota's original FT-EV concept at the 2009 Detroit auto show, but the new FT-EV II concept, which will debut at the 2009 Tokyo show, takes things to a new level.

For the most part, FT-EV II doesn't seem to differ much from the FT-EV -- it's still an electric-powered microcar aimed at urban commuters -- but the difference lies in the details. While FT-EV was built off the European iQ minicar, FT-EV II is all-new, and is said to be even smaller. Somehow, Toyota manages to pack room for four within -- impressive, considering the iQ seats only 3...

The FT-EV II manages to squeeze out as much interior space a possible, in part by eliminating traditional throttle and brake pedals, and incorporates them into the steering controls. Dual vertical hand grips are most likely tilted forward to go and pulled back to brake.

Although range is suggested to be approximately 56 miles, there's still no word about recharge times or if the FT-EV II will even see production. We'll report what we find out after the Toyota press conference on October 21 at the 2009 Tokyo motor show.
