Ford Ka and Global Ranger Not Destined For the U.S.

Despite Ford’s plans to utilize global platforms (like the new Fiesta and next-gen Focus), the company seems to have no interest in bringing its Ka minicar or the next-gen global Ranger pickup to the U.S.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally had previously indicated both models were being considered for North America, but Ford product planners have deemed the Ka too small for American tastes.

“Our view is that the Fiesta is about the smallest vehicle we think will be a real success in the United States,” said Mulally.

The Ka was co-developed with Fiat, which uses the same platform for its 500. That car will arrive in America (via Chrysler showrooms) in 2011.

As for the Ranger, Ford has been looking for a replacement for the North American version, which is scheduled to fade into oblivion come 2011. At one time, the next-generation global Ranger was considered for our shores, but the idea has been canned for an unspecified reason. Unless Ford’s interested in reviving the midsize F100 pickup project, there may not be a direct replacement for the truck after 2011.

Still, we wonder if an EcoBoost F-150 -- due in 2011 -- may attract some former Ranger buyers looking for a fuel-efficient truck…

1. Ask Toyota if the Tacoma fills a slot between nothing and large. This is a STUPID and shortsighted decision. the Ranger needed to go 10 years back, but NO replacement?? Idiots.

2. Regarding the KA, the "real success" Mulally speaks of is being able to turn a big profit on the car. And a small pickup would be nice. C'mon Ford!!!

3. When will American car and truck manufacturers pull their collective heads out of their kisters?  They keep telling us what they think we won't buy. The rest of the world runs on diesel engines yet the Big Three won't put any diesel engines in their cars and 1/2 ton trucks for sale in the USA. They keep trying to ram hybrids and electric cars down our throats. Be honest Ford, do you think many people interested in a Ford F150 will buy the hybrid version? If you want your fleet MPG average to go up you better start re-thinking your decision to forego diesels in the near future. Likewise when the GM Volt goes on sale for +$30K next year it is going to be a big flop unless deep discounts and tax incentives are given. GMC will be asking for another government bailout if they double-down their bet on the Volt.

And the idea that Americans won't buy very small cars may be right with gas at $2.60 a gallon but wait until the price goes back up to +$4.00 a gallon. Ford will wish they had brought in the Ka while Chrysler (I mean Fiat) sells a bunch of 500s to the 17-23 year olds driving to school or the short commute crowd.
