Several reports indicate that the two-time world champion will sign on with Ferrari’s F1 team starting with the 2010 season. The contract, reportedly valued at more than $36 million per year, will place Alonso behind the wheel of a Ferrari Formula 1 car for the next five years. There is an option for a sixth.
Neither Alonso or Ferrari are confirming reports, but Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari’s team principal, told reporters “as soon as we are ready we will let you know. We don’t want to wait too long.”
Speculation suggests Alonso’s signing may prompt Kimi Raikkonen to return to his former employer, McLaren, for the 2010 season.
