From 1999 to 2002, Panoz raced in the ALMS' LMP1 class, and found success with several overall wins. The American automaker announced earlier this year that it planned to rejoin the prototype cars with a revolutionary front-engined LMP1 car for the 2010 season, but the company has shelved that idea in order to develop a replacement for its aging GT2 racer.
“There are a lot of reasons why the LMP1 can’t happen, but the idea hasn’t gone away,” said Don Panoz, who runs the company along his son Danny.
“The plan was always for a road car, so we’re coming at it from a different angle,” said Danny Panoz. “We are looking to have a new GT2 [car]. We can’t be ready for the Sebring 12 Hours (the first ALMS race of the 2010 season), but we are definitely trying to have something up and running during next season.”
Tom Milner’s Prototype Technology Group is the official Panoz team in the ALMS, and currently runs the Panoz GT2 car. The team will also field the new GT2 car following its debut next season.
