Ford, Honda Compete for Number Two on the Hybrid Sales Podium

Toyota may still be the king of hybrid sales in the U.S., but Honda and Ford are duking it out for second-place position.

In the first nine months of 2009, Honda has sold 29,958 hybrids, an 8 percent gain over last year, thanks in part to the introduction of the new Insight. As reported yesterday, Ford is also seeing a considerable jump in hybrid sales, thanks in no small part to the advent of the Fusion and Mercury Milan Hybrids. So far, Ford has sold 26,016 hybrids, which is a 73-percent jump from last year.

For the first nine months of this year Honda has sold 29,958 Hybrid Civic and Insight units, an 8-percent gain over last year's performance. Ford on the other hand has moved 26,016 Fusion and Escape Hybrids. The increase over last year's numbers, as we reported yesterday, was a very impressive 73-percent gain.

Ford may be closing in on Honda, but the two are still far removed from Toyota's hybrid figures. In the first nine months of 2009, Toyota managed to sell 144,351 hybrids, including the Prius, Camry and Highlander Hybrid models. Prius sales alone reportedly account for two-thirds of that figure.
Still, hybrid sales still account for approximately 3 percent of the total U.S. market share, and thanks to relatively inexpensive gas prices, that figure has continued to fall.
