If the prospect of picking up one of the last Pontiacs sounds appealing, you’d better move fast. General Motors says the wind-down of Pontiac is moving quicker than it expected, and approximately 16,000 cars remain at dealers.

Given the manner GM euthanized its Oldsmobile, Pontiac’s quick death may seem surprising. In 2001, GM announced Oldsmobile would die, but the brand didn’t cease to exist until 2006. In that time, 250,000 additional Oldsmobiles were built.

Pontiac’s disappearance, however, is quicker.

“The phase-out of Pontiac is different than the phase-out of Olds,” said Buick-Pontiac-GMC general manager Susan Docherty. “Pontiac is quicker. We have only 16,000 plus change [cars] left, and within 60 to 90 days, we will be out of cars.”

For those doing the math, that means GM could rid itself of Pontiac stock by November, far sooner than the year-end target it originally set. Not surprisingly, GM’s vice president of sales, Mark LaNeve, says there is no push to re-stock those dealers.

“We’re not going to do any [additional builds],” he said. “We haven’t built any -- a couple for fleet sales, but not many.”

1. Jeez, they're wasting no time with killing off one of their core brands the past 50 years.  Shame on you GM, shame on you.
