Toyota unveiled its FT-86 rear-wheel-drive sports coupe a few weeks back at the 2009 Tokyo motor show, but the Japanese automaker is reportedly already toying with a convertible version of the two-door.
The FT-86 marked the arrival of the long-awaited “Toyobaru” coupe, which was co-developed with Subaru. The car seen at the show was the concept version, so the production version will likely differ slightly from the car shown above. As of now, only a coupe variant of the car is confirmed, but Autotelegraaf reports that a convertible version may also make it to market.
According to Autotelegraaf, a senior member at Toyota proposed the convertible, and a business case can be made for production of the small droptop as there is significant market demand. At this point, however, it is unclear if such a variant will even appear as a concept car.
It’s also unclear what name the coupe will wear when it reaches production, although the FT-86 moniker isn’t likely to carry over. The Toyota source was reportedly unsure of its final name, but said Toyota is considering resurrecting the Celica nameplate.
