Mobile WiFi hotspots aren't new technology, but they are becoming more mainstream. GM will initially offer the service in SUVs, vans, and trucks. The mobile internet connectivity will allow further productivity and entertainment possibilities for extended trips.

"Ninety percent of customers prefer surfing the Internet over just watching movies," said Sterling Pratz, CEO of Autonet Mobile. Initially aimed at family vehicles, we suspect that the service will be equally shared by business applications. The device allows mobile businesses to stay connected while on the go. The device retails for $499, but can be snagged for as little as $199 through November 30. Service starts at $29 for 1GB per month and $59 for 5GB of usage. The router has a 150-foot radius and will allow upwards of 10 connections. The device is easily transferrable from one car to another with the available docking station.

GM first offered the mobile WiFi option in the Cadillac CTS sedan last year. Autonet also offers its service for Chrysler and Volkswagen products.
