We sure hope so -- and if the specifications reported are anywhere near accurate, we pray it comes to North America.

According to Autocar, the hot Polo variant would use VW’s 1.4-liter “Twincharged” (re: supercharged and turbocharged) engine, and would pump out 200 hp. Given the size of the car (think Ford Fiesta), that sort of power could create a subcompact hot hatch. Tuners, however, have plenty of potential – engineers have reportedly been able to eke up to 280 hp from the small-displacement engine, and can rocket the car to the vicinity of 150 mph.

Sadly, we likely won’t ever see the Polo GTI on our shores. VW’s American executives have previously discussed bringing the Polo over to the US, but only as a sedan and a tall hatchback, the latter to compete against the likes of the Honda Fit. Unless Honda suddenly sees fit to launch an Si model of its entry-level model, we doubt VW can build a business case for its pocket rocket to enter North America.

1. Maybe I'm just prejudiced, but the complexity of the twin-charged engine plus VW's less-than-stellar track record for reliability definitely would put this one out of contention for me.
