With just days to go before the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show starts, specifications on the stripped-down Mazda MX-5 Superlight concept are starting to emerge from the shadows.

As we reported more than a month ago, the MX-5 Superlight commemorates the 20th anniversary of the MX-5/Miata. As the name implies, the MX-5 weighs in at a lithe 2194 pounds, thanks to the deletion of the roof and windshield.

The Superlight supposedly shares the same 1.8-liter I-4 as a normal MX-5, but a few Mazdaspeed goodies, including a cold-air intake and performance exhaust system, are bolted on for good measure. Rumors suggest the car also rides 30mm lower than a stock MX-5, thanks to a set of Bilstein B16 coil-overs and new Eibach stabilizers.  Slotted rotors and four piston front calipers may bring the Mazda to a screeching halt.

We'll learn more when we see the MX-5 Superlight in person come September 15, when it debuts at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. We've heard of no plans to actually produce the extreme roadster, but we'll keep our fingers crossed...
