Scion iQ, Refreshed tC Expected for 2011

With sales down almost 58 percent from last year, Scion is ready for an update.  "Product freshness is key," Yoshi Inaba, CEO of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. told Automotive News. "One of my jobs is to revive the Scion spirit in the United States."  Scion has aimed is products at the young hipsters of America, and that means new, updated, and fresh styling is needed. A stagnant design just won't do

Scion does have some excitement in the works, though.  The iQ, which seats three adults and one child, is primarily meant for short trips and city commuting. Powered by a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine, it will go on sale here in late 2010 as a 2011 model.

The tC is due for an update in 2011 and we can expect to see another wild rendering from the design team.  No major changes are expected for the xD until 2013 or 2014, as it just joined the Scion lineup in 2008.

The xB will be banking on special edition models to carry it through to its next refresher.  Redesigned for the 2008 model year, the xB has recently encountered some steep competition from the Nissan Cube and Kia's Soul.

A rear-drive sports car is headed for Scion or Toyota in the not-too-distant future.  This $20,000-range auto is being developed by Toyota and the folks from Fuji Heavy Industries with a rumored output of 225 hp.  This should make for an exciting collaboration.  We expect to see this masterpiece as a 2013 offering.

1. Scion is a relic of the real-estate boom (such as, young yuppies buying townhouses and overfinancing and buying Scions, etc.).  Toyota should dump it promptly and replace all Scions with a suitable Supra replacement.  This makes more sense than trying to sell su $15k cars that are no better than five year old Hondas.  The "hipster" market is dead as they all now have NO money.  Stick to Lexuses.

3. When Scion was launched, I remember how excited I was to have a youth-directed brand from Toyota. They were cool at first, but now the whole thing doesn't look THAT exciting. The iQ fits perfectly into the Scion brand, but the tC and almost everything else looks dated. And, to the buddy above me... It's CAMARO, dude (your profile name).
