With the news that Michael Schumacher will not be able to make his Formula 1 comeback and fill in for Felipe Massa at the European Grand Prix, Ferrari announced that test driver Luca Badoer will take the wheel.

Luca Badoer has been a test driver for Ferrari since 1998 and was last on a Formula 1 starting grid in 1999. When he starts at the European Grand Prix, he will be the oldest driver on the field at 38, eclipsing his former teammate Rubens Barrichello by one year.

While Badoer is set to take Massa’s seat at the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, next weekend, Schumacher hasn’t ruled out a return to Formula 1 quite yet.

“Speculations are part of the world of motorsport. Many people have their ideas as far as this topic is concerned,” said Schumacher. “But the truth is that I am very unhappy that I can’t do what I wanted to do, which is helping Ferrari in this difficult moment. This is what I can tell you right now and I have to live with.”
