Since the Pontiac Vibe is no more come August, what vehicle will take its place in the General Motors/Toyota joint venture known as NUMMI? In a word: nothing.

GM announced today that the ownership stake it has in NUMMI (short for New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated) will not be transferred to the firm post-bankruptcy.

“After extensive analysis, GM and Toyota could not reach an agreement on a future product plan that made sense for all parties,” said Troy Clarke, president of GM’s North American operations.

“There are no future GM vehicles planned for the joint venture at this time. Given that, GM believes it is in the best interest of the ‘New GM’ to place our ownership interest in ‘Old GM.’”

NUMMI will likely continue in light of this development, as the plant also builds the Matrix hatchback and the Tacoma pickup truck.

Located in Fremont, California, NUMMI was founded by GM and Toyota in 1984. Vehicles produced at the facility include the 1985-1988 Chevrolet Nova and Toyota Sprinter, the 1989-2002 Geo/Chevrolet Prism and Toyota Corolla, and the 2002-2009 Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix.

1. They are essentially built on the same platform, in the same plant. How is it that the GM ones are so horrible (Vibe, Nova)?

2. Simple, union parts for the GMs. lol Speaking of those morons, why didn't they figure this out 20 years ago?  I bet most UAW members don't even know this plant exists.  They would throw a fit.  It's been a long known not-so-secret in the industry that Toyota was the only side of the deal making money; the Vibe was a joke.  I've driven brand new Vibes and Matrixes, and the Matrix is superior in NVH and ride/handling.  Hell, GM couldn't get it right building the exact same cars on the same LINE as Toyota.  No wonder they are in bankruptcy.  P.S. I'd take a Tacoma hands-down over a Colorado/Canyon any day.

3. Yet another reporter who does not have the ability to check their facts.  NUMMI currently builds the GM Vibe (until the end of August), the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Tacoma. A fact that can easily be checked by simply taking the time to log onto NUMMI's website.

The Matrix are built in Cambridge Ontario.
