We’ve not yet seen the crossover ourselves, but we’ve learned that the 2010 GMC Terrain, built upon the recently unveiled 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, will debut at the 2009 New York auto show in April.

Although a crossover of this size is new to GMC’s portfolio in the U.S, it’s nothing the brand hasn’t toyed with abroad. Geo Trackers were sold in Canada as GMCs for a short period in the 1990s, and a rebadged Saturn Vue is presently sold in the Middle East as a GMC Terrain (pictured).

While that model is little more than an Acadia-like grille tacked onto a Vue, we’re told the new Terrain carries more GMC design DNA – picture a smaller Acadia, if you will. We’ve yet to hear details on the Terrain’s powertrain, but we wouldn’t be surprised if engines offered in the Equinox, including a direct-injection 2.4-liter I-4, appear in the GMC as well.

We’ll know for certain come April 8, when we’ll see the latest iteration of GM’s Theta crossover in person. Stay with Automobile Magazine for all the latest from the New York auto show.

1. I thought we were to expect more crossovers (and sedans) for GM's Buick brand, not GMC. I guess this eliminates the possibility of a BUICK Vue which I was almost certain would pop up eventually as a mini-Enclave....

2. GM already has a 'premium' version of the Theta with the Caddy SRX. I'm not sure adding yet another iteration of a crossover is in the best interests for the company, but it does replace the soon-to-depart Torrent in the Pontiac-Buick-GMC group.

You bring up an interesting point with the Vue - we've seen plenty of Vue 2-Mode hybrids running around as test vehicles and they look *so* close to production. At this point, GM's offering no comment to its future, but I think the V-6/ 2-Mode combination could be shifted to another Theta at this stage. It'd take some work, but I've no idea why it couldn't be done...
