GM axes the 2009 Pontiac G8 ST Sport Truck

When GM took a look at Pontiac's the future model lineup, the 2009 Pontiac G8 ST didn't quite fit the company's plan for models with long-term viability. Therefore GM told dealers today that the sport truck would not make its scheduled launch late this fall.

The Pontiac G8 ST was essentially an Americanized version of the Holden Ute; a G8 with a pickup bed. It would have been the closest thing to a Chevrolet El Camino revival yet, as well as one of the few unibody pickups on the market.

Pontiac is instead looking to become a "niche brand" that is "focused on sporty fun to drive cars" as part the plan that GM outlined to Congress late last year. Although you can't get much more "niche" than offering an Australian car-based pickup with a 6.0-liter V-8 as far as we're concerned.

1. Maybe they should slap a Chevy face on it and actually call it the El Camino, since it may fit more with Chevy's lineup as opposed to Pontiac's anyway. Besides, Pontiac wasn't the one with a pick-up car back when in the first place!

2. i visited australia a few years ago, and when i saw all the holdens (especially the ute) running around, all i could think was, "why can't we have those in the states?" hopefully gm will try again once it's back in shape.

3. 1) Why would Pontiac get such a model in the 1st place, it should have been a GMC or Chevrolet.

2) Maybe GM can move some dollars into the Cruze and other important new launches.
