Ford's long-awaited EcoBoost technology will soon be available on several models, including the 2010 Ford Flex, 2010 Lincoln MKT, 2010 Lincoln MKS and 2010 Ford Taurus. While it is being applied to V-6 engines in all these applications, the Lincoln C concept currently on display at the 2009 North American International Auto Show may preview a more practical application for the technology: an EcoBoost four-cylinder for the 2011 Ford Focus.
The Lincoln C concept is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter 180-hp four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to Ford, this combination yields 43 mpg on the highway, a 23 percent increase over the 35 mpg the current Focus achieves in highway driving.
Ford has not made any comments about the powertrain of the next-gen 2011 Ford Focus, but Ford executives have said there is a serious intent for the Lincoln C concept's powertrain. We can think of no better car to dump it into other than the Focus (except, of course, the Fiesta). Our guess is the EcoBoost engine will possibly be limited to high-performance or lower-volume models-but we'll have to wait until Ford releases more details about the new Focus to be sure.
